Today is Spanish Day and we have all been celebrating Spain throughout the day. As well as the many exciting activities happening throughout the day, the children have all been creating some fabulous works of art based on the styles of specific Spanish Artists.
Reception and Year 1 have been following the works of Spanish Artist Joan Miro. The children looked at his artwork called “Imaginary Boy” and talked about the shapes, lines and colours he used. They drew the basic shapes in pencil then used three primary colours on our art work.
Year 2 and 3 learnt about the Spanish artist Pablo Picasso. His ‘Weeping Woman’ paintings showed how a woman felt after losing a child in the Spanish Civil War. They created their own portraits; choosing two different emotions and different colours to represent the different emotions of the people portrayed.
Year 4 and 5 learnt about Mola art. Mola art is a panel sewn onto front and back of dresses worn by the Guna women from Panama. They used different colours, shapes, patterns and layers using collage: cutting out shapes and arranging them to fill the space.
Year 6 learnt about the life of Mexican artist Frida Kahlo. We looked at her self portraits. She used a lot of bright colours in her self-portraits because they reminded her of the vibrant colours of the hot country where she lived. They drew our own self-portraits surrounding it with items, colours and places that reflect our lives.
