Another community Lantern Parade is planned this year for 5pm Friday 24th November from The Bermondsey Market Place to Southwark Park. Illuminate Rotherhithe are pleased to announce they will be once again offering free art workshops to local schools and community groups to help everyone make their own lanterns ready to bring along to the procession. We will be running workshops in October and November.
RPS Primary will be attending of course and will be busy making our lanterns today at school. The large willow lanterns take around 2 – 3 hours to make plus drying time and small teams will need to work together to help each other with bending, holding and sticking. The willow rods can be bent and fixed into a huge range of shapes (globes, boats, flowers, moons, diamonds, houses etc) and children are encouraged to come up with their own shapes with guidance from the organisers.
If families want to join in there will be a number of sessions running in local community centres and other public spaces in evening and weekend and half term to be announced over the coming weeks. We are greatly looking forward to the forthcoming event and indeed, in seeing the completed lanterns created by our children this week.
Pictures of the lanterns will be posted this Friday so look out for those. We have added more information to this blog in the form of a gallery of leaflets so be sure to check those out.
