Last week Rotherhithe Primary School celebrated Science Week 2018. Throughout the week, the children were looking at the wonders of Space and our amazing Solar System. All classes took part in a series of workshops covering this subject ranging from looking at the planets and stars to lunar landings.
As part of the weeks workshops, every class created rockets, which were made using empty plastic bottles, beautifully decorated and ready for launch. The launching mechanism was created using a little chemistry and physics. By adding vinegar to the bottle followed by baking soda, the reaction between the two materials when mixed (shook) created a chemical reaction causing gasses to build up in the bottle, which in turn created a forward thrust launching the upturned bottle (rocket) into the air.
We had a few great successes as we watch our rockets launching quite a few meters into the sky!
