This week, Year 6 explored how shadows are formed and why they change. The children learned that the length of a shadow varies depending on how far an object is from the light source, noticing that the shadow becomes longer when the object is closer to the light and shorter when it is moved further away. As part of their investigation, pupils practised collecting and recording data carefully by measuring shadow lengths at different distances and organising their findings clearly.
They also used their understanding that light travels in straight lines to explain why shadows always match the shape of the object that casts them. Because light cannot bend around an object, it creates a shadow with the same outline wherever the light is blocked. Through practical activities and discussion, Year 6 deepened both their scientific knowledge and their enquiry skills.
