This week, the children explored how to keep people safe from the sun by investigating where to position sun shades around the school grounds. Using chairs to represent people sitting outside, they shone a torch to act as the sun and carefully drew the shape of the shadows the chairs created.
They then moved each chair closer to the torch and made a second drawing to show how the shadow changed when the object moved. This helped them see how the size and position of a shadow depend on the location of the light source.
Using what they discovered, the children experimented with where umbrellas would need to be placed so that everyone around the school would have the most shade. It was a fantastic mix of scientific investigation, problem‑solving, and teamwork—and the children were thoroughly engaged throughout!
