We were very lucky to be selected this year to participate in the National Literacy Young Readers programme. Year 1 and 2 were treated to a fantastic visit from Rod Kitson (illustrator and local artist) and Wendy Shearer (storyteller and author). The children really enjoyed the fun reading based activities and they also got to select a brand new book to take home.
Lemar as one of the art ambassadors could not miss the opportunity of interviewing an artist and here is his interview with Rod.
Report by Lemar:
On Wednesday morning, Rod Kitson visited KS1 explaining that he has been painting people for many years and has painted over 500 pictures using oil paints. He brought a picture in to show them and so they could feel the texture of the painting. Rod has painted an 86-year-old person and a 10-year-old child it was the manager’s child of the Surrey Quays shopping centre. He is creating a poem into real life. The poem is named Jellybean.
Questions & Answers:
Q1: What inspired you to start painting portraits?
“I always love painting because it helps me create my own world and things that don’t exist”
Q2: How long have you been painting?
“Painting for about ten years as a career but I painted when I was a child”
Q3: Do you like helping kids paint?
“I do like helping kids learn how to paint because you can show them that it can be a job too.”
Rod has invited the children to visit his studio next year, so we are very excited.
