Today in science club we have been exploring how to lift ice on a string. How we did this is that you fill a bowl, a cup or a plate with water and then place an ice cube in the water and then place a string on the ice. After, you will put salt on the string. Lift up the string and see that it is floating!
HOW DOES THIS WORK?
The addition of the salt lowers the freezing point of water, making some of the ice melt. The ice melts and refreezes a little around the string causing it to stick to the ice.
