This week years 3/4 attended a free trip to conduct a foreshore dig along the Thames. The dig took place around the Rotherhithe area and consisted of a site introduction and the history of some of the key features that can be seen along the dig site. The children had the opportunity to experience what it is like to be an archaeologist, digging for Ancient relics, coins, clay items and much more.
They managed to find many remains of animal bones and teeth, old smoking pipes used by dock workers, Victorian pottery, pottery from the Medieval times, nails from the boats and lots of oyster shells (these used to be cheap to buy and many people would eat them and throw the shells back into the river.)
