Sunday 27th October saw the start of diwali, a hindu festival. This festival is often referred to as the festival of lights. In assemblies and class this week children learned that hinduism is one of the 4 largest religions in the world. They found out that the festival also marks the start of the hindu new year and that hindu families often celebrate diwali together; they decorate their homes, send each other diwali cards, eat special meals together and often mark the event with fireworks.
The children learned about the hindu story of Rama and Sita when good overcame evil and light overcame darkness. Diva’s are often lit at diwali. These are small lamps to signify the journey rama and sita took and the lamps that lit their way.
Why not make a diva lamp out of salt dough or clay at home?
