Rotherhithe Primary School has been running Forest School for children in the early years and year 1 for the past 5 years. This programme takes small groups of children to an enclosed Nature Reserve in Southwark Park to investigate and experience nature, whilst building on a variety of skills.
This has been extremely successful in supporting children’s ability to communicate with one another, work in teams and solve problems. Due to these positive outcomes, this term we are starting a new Forest School group of mixed ages from years 2 to years 6.
Some of the activities include:
- Digging and planting vegetables
- Finding out about bugs and insects
- Pond dipping
- Making collections
- Identifying birds and bird watching
- Den building
- Building fires
Children will attend the Thursday afternoon session 12:30 – 3.00pm. They will eat a packed lunch (provided by the school) in the nature garden before starting our session. This will be for the next 6 weeks, with the possibility of it being extended. There will be an opportunity for you to visit the forest school on the last session.
