Last year we worked with” Mindup”, part of the Hawn foundation, to become a mindful school. You may have heard your children talking about “Brain breaks” and lessons about how their brain works. Brain breaks are taken at the beginning, middle and end of the day or at times when the children need to get their brain ready for learning. For example after a playtime or lunch time. This is a 2-3 minute time of quiet relaxation, where the children are encouraged to clear their minds to give their brains a rest, and be calm and ready to learn.
Our staff join in too and everyone really enjoys them. It has supported the calm and well behaved ethos of our school and is a skill the children can use throughout their lives. Part of the approach is to practice being mindful in different situations, for example when listening to a piece of music, eating or even walking. In addition to the neuroscience lessons there are lessons on “kindness” and “Optimism”.
We will be offering another parent workshop in the spring term if you are interested in finding out more about mindfulness or considering continuing the practice at home.Alternatively you can go to the Hawn foundation website where there is information about how mindfulness works in schools.
